Going Home

He had been there and back again
We went from Waterton Lakes and did a quick drive through of Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park.

Back in the USA
Glacier National Park
It was closed when we went at the beginning of our trip. It was an incredible day.

We really did have a lot of good weather
Warm, sunny, not a cloud in the sky.

The Rockies are spectacular
Oddly, I found the scenery less dramatic than on those rainy days we complained about.

Not complaining, though
Plus, scenery is really hard to photograph on sunny days because of the haze.

A bit of haze
By the way, large RVs and trailers are not allowed on Going to the Sun Road, which means we couldn't have driven to Waterton Lakes the way I planned in June. Good save.

I guess most detours and changes work out
The Park Service lets you park your trailer at the St. Mary Visitors Center so we could do the drive. The road is extremely narrow and winding with no shoulder in may spots.

The biggest thing you'll see on the road is the Glacier Touring Car
We left Glacier and started driving home.

Yellowstone National Park
I was surprised that Scott decided to go back to Yellowstone.

Lamar Valley, Yellowstone National Park
He actually just wanted to find more Bears. There are never enough.

That's not a Bear!!!
We got a room at a Super 8 and, then, after a quick dinner, we went on a Bear hunt through the Lamar Valley. No Bears, but baby Pronghorns.

The most Pronghorns I have ever seen in Yellowstone
I have seen hundreds of Pronghorn in my life, but never a small baby.

So cute
Plus I got a great shot of a hawk (Red-tailed perhaps?) taking off.

Take off
Watching us watching him
Unlike our last visit where all the Bison were off road, this was an on-road day.

We saw lots really, really, really close.

It took forever to get back, well after sunset. Bison on the road after dark are not a good thing.

Scott contemplated trying to fish the next day and I was considering a hike. But, come morning, he decided he wanted to head home. On the way out through Lamar, we were rewarded with some Elk ...

Although seemingly domesticated, they can be dangerous
... one Bear ...

A Black Bear, not a Grizzly
... and a few Deer ...

White-tailed Deer, much slimmer than Mule Deer
... plus a repeat of the on-road Bison.

Lots of babies this time of year
We took the Chief Joseph Highway again - not as glorious in bright sunlight, but still pretty impressive. I did snap another Red-tailed Hawk in flight.

Flying off
We were glad we were leaving because the traffic going into Yellowstone was insane -- including 100s of motorcycles.

A beautiful place
Then, hours and hours of driving, rewarded by incredible clouds and some rain/hail as we entered Colorado Springs.

Colorado sky
Home. Laundry. Unpacking.

Memories.

A dream fulfilled
