Trollstigen

Sod building
Upon leaving Geiranger, we also left fjords (mainly) for a short while. We passed over high plains farms, stopping at the Kettle Holes at Alstad. This is where the Valldalen river passes through a box canyon and a series of kettle holes formed by ancient glaciers.

The brilliant sunshine made it difficult to photograph, but, trust me, it was beautiful
And, a great spot for a picnic.

A turquoise river
After our successful detour the other day, we decided once again to stray from the prescribed route to take the Trollstigen - or Troll's Path. This crosses over a high pass obviously carved by glaciers.

Going up Trollstigen
Along a silty green river ...

At the top
... that passes the visitors center (actually more just a snack bar and gift shop) ...

The Visitors Center
... before plunging as Stigfossen 1,000 feet down the mountain.
The falls
There is a short hike to a lookout that juts out over the dropoff to reveal the NEXT part of the adventure. The path continues on to the glacial icecap (that we have been circumnavigating for a few days).

The overlook
That is an extreme drop
The actual Troll's path is an exceptionally steep road with 11 hairpin curves that descends into the valley.

Quite a road
And, we drove it!
For a Coloradan (or, probably, a Norwegian) it wasn't too bad, but I imagine some folks really freak out at this drive, especially the bridge that passes by the falls. The grade sometimes exceeds 10 percent, so figure out how to downshift your rental car before you go.

Beautiful waterfalls
It's really worth the detour.

Clear water cascading down the mountain
Scott, enjoying the trip
